Museum of the Emporda

The rooms of the Museum of the Emporda present a wide chronological spectrum of our county’s art and archaeology, from pre-history down to our own days, with particular attention to 19th and 20th century Catalan and Emporda painting.

The collection starts with exhibits of archaeological finds made in the Alt Emporda, from the Neolithic period down to the period of Romanisation, including a collection of personal ornaments, Greek ceramic works of black and red figures and glass receptacles. It continues with the mediaeval and modern epochs, outstanding within which are the capitals from Sant Pere de Rodes monastery and stores of works from the El Prado Museum (Mengs, Mignard, Herrera, etc.).

Through works by Pinazo, Sorolla, Nonell, Martí Alsina, Berga i Boix, Casas, Gargallo, Gimeno, Mir, Masriera, Sunyer, Marés, Dunyach and Casanovas, among others, we can follow the history of Catalan art from the middle of the 19th century down to modernism and the early avant-garde movements, with works by Tapies, Ponç and Cuixart. Finally, works by Comalat, Bonaterra, Llavanera, Eusebi de Puig, Núñez, Salvador Dalí, Àngels Santos Torroella, Àngel Planells, Joan Massanet, Evarist Vallès, Joan Sibecas, Joan Padern, Pujolboira, Lluís Roura and Josep Ministral, as well as many others, show the evolution of Emporda painting from realistic landscapes, through surrealism down to conceptual abstraction and the new figuration.
The Museum also organises various temporary exhibitions over the course of the year.
