Montgri Castle

Symbol of the municipality. Started in 1294 at the orders of King James II, due to a confrontation with the earldom of Empúries, the works were interrupted in 1301 and the building left unfinished. The walls were raised, forming a square with the four towers built onto each of the corners. Restoration work was carried out in 1988. The castle can be reached from Torroella, on foot, along a signposted mountain path

Walls: 31 m long and 13 m high, crowned by square-plan merlons with pyramid crown and loopholes in the base. Towers: Cylindrical. Three levels on the north-west tower and two levels on the rest.
Façade: South-facing. Entrance gate formed by a round arch with large voussoirs.
Interior: Square-plan, stone-paved central yard, with a large tank.
Other constructions: remains of walls facing the south façade, tank to the northern side.
Restoration: consolidation of parts of the wall, fitting of a spiral staircase inside the northeast tower, gangway with safety handrail around the entire perimeter of the upper part.
Location: top part of the Montgrí mountain range, at an altitude of 315 m.
Architectural style: marks the transition from Romanesque to Gothic
