Emporda Golf Course
The Emporda Golf Course is a superb 27-hole design from noted Texan architect Robert von Haage. Opened in 1991, the Emporda Golf Club is fully-established among Europe’s finest top 50 courses. Composed of three nine-hole loops, the Green, Blue and Gold Courses give the possibility of three different 18-hole layouts when combined. The Green and Blue Courses are used for important competitions and produce the most challenging course.
Von Haage has taken full advantage of the open, undulating terrain of the Green Course to produce a layout with more than a few resemblances to a British links. The track is treeless and almost barren in appearance with wide fairways and rough left intentionally long. Extended bunkers present an additional test and a demand for accuracy. Adding a little more of a links experience is the breeze coming in off The Mediterranean Sea, with an uncanny ability to whip up into gusts when least expected, the extra spice just adds to the challenge.
The Green nine is very different to the Blue and Gold, being completely treeless with a links feel. 10ft pyramid mounds and desert sand bunkers line most fairways. Water features prominently on many holes. The signature 9th hole has a huge 40 ft island green protected by a menacing lake. When the wind blows, this exposed Green nine can be very challenging. The Blue and Gold nines are similar to each other, both winding through forests. The course is always in superb condition.
Mr. Von Haage has succeeded in crafting a masterful design at Emporda that presents as much a test of golf skills as any course in Spain. Fortunately, he has also shown compassion for those less accomplished. Offering 6 different tee positions, he has acknowledged that this is not a world of only low handicappers. A further 9 holes are currently being built, extending Emporda to a 36-hole complex. The course is now host to the final PGA European Tour Qualifying School in conjunction with Pals. Emporda golf course is up there with the very best, and is a must play during your stay.
