  • Esclanya Church

Esclanya forms part of the municipality of Begur and lies in the northwestern sector of the municipal district. Down to the end of the Middle Ages it was owned by the lords of Cruïlles.

The town of Esclanya is laid out around Sant Esteve d’Esclanya church, mentioned in documents dating from 1280. The church contains features pertaining to the various periods of Romanesque architecture from the 10th century, which leads us to think that another church stood there formerly.

Esclanyà castle, popularly known as “Esclanya tower”, is a building dating from the 14th century. There remains of it the great rectangular-plan tower, from the Romanesque period and with merlons on the northern side. The economy of Esclanya was traditionally based on vine and olive cultivation, while tile production was the main industrial activity.
